The word "albatross" is sometimes used to mean an encumbrance, or a wearisome burden. It is an allusion to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1798).

In the poem, an albatross starts to follow a ship - being followed by an albatross was generally considered an omen of good luck. However, a titular mariner shoots the albatross with a crossbow, which is regarded as an act that will curse the ship (which indeed suffers terrible mishaps). To punish him, his companions induce him to wear the dead albatross around his neck indefinitely (until they all die from the curse, as it happens). Thus the albatross can be both an omen of good or bad luck, as well as a metaphor for a burden to be carried (as penance).

This sense is catalogued in the Oxford English Dictionary from 1936 and 1955, but it seems only to have entered general usage in the 1960s.

In anger, the crew forces the Mariner to wear the dead albatross about his neck, perhaps to illustrate the burden he must suffer from killing it, or perhaps as a sign of regret (Ah! Well a-day! Dieser Sturmvogel gleicht dem Pintados oder weiß und schwarzen Sturmvogel, nur ist die Farbe der Gefieders verschieden; denn sie ist hier braun auf weißem Grunde. Auch den Namen "Südsturmvogel", welchen einige Reisende ihm beigelegt haben, soll er ganz verdienen, da man ihn nur unter den hohen südlichen Breiten antrifft; wo man verschiedene Arten von den in den untern Breiten sich aufhaltenden Sturmvögeln nicht mehr antrifft. Der braune Sturmvogel hat ungefähr die Größe einer Taube; das Gefieder desselben ist auf dem Kopfe, dem Rücken und einem Theile der Oberseite der Flügel lichtbraun; der Bauch und die untern Flügel sind weiß, und so auch die Schwanzfedern, welche jedoch braune Spitzen haben; sie sind sehr stark befiedert, so daß sie das rauheste Klima, welches sie bewohnen, aushalten können. Wenn man gleich diese Sturmvögel so häufig zwischen den schwimmenden Eisinseln findet, so verschwinden sie doch, wie alle andern Vögel, wenn man sich dem festen Eise nähert, welches sich schon ziemlich weit in den Polgegenden der südlichen Welt erstreckt.

Catharacta antarctica (W3)

"Subantarktikskuas" ("Catharacta Antarctica") sind antarktische Vögel und ernähren sich von Fischen, Krebsen, Tintenfischen, Vogeleiern, schwachen Jungvoegeln und Aas. Sie sind das ganze Jahr an der Küste der Südspitze Afrikas anzutreffen. Oft folgen sie Fischtrawlern, da sie besonders an deren Abfällen interessiert sind.
"Subantarktikskuas" brüten in der Antarktis und den vorgelagerten Inseln.
