Abstract
The year 2006 marks the quatercentenary of the first known European charting of any part of the Australian coastline, when the Dutch mariner Willem Janszoon explored 300 kms of the north-west coast of Cape York Peninsula. He bestowed seven placenames, two of which, "Moent" and "Dubbelde Ree" have ambiguous meanings or referents. This paper attempts to resolve the enigmas behind these names by considering geographic, linguistic and historical evidence.
"Moent" is particularly challenging, with several possible linguistic sources, some more plausible than others. The most compelling evidence points to it either referring to the western entrance to Endeavour Strait, or a Dutch rendition of an Indigenous Australian word.
"Dubbelde Ree" is less problematic. The issue surrounding this name is whether its second element is meant to be "Ree", an abbreviation of "Reede" ("Roadstead"), or "Rev", an abbreviation of "Revier" ("River"). The search for the meaning of these placenames has provided credible evidence demonstrating that Janszoon explored the coastline in greater detail than has hitherto been thought, and that, in all likelihood, made contact with the local inhabitants.

We all use place names everyday to describe our surroundings, where we’re going or where we’ve been.
Rivers, mountains, plains, towns, suburbs, reefs, shoals and undersea features all have names. Whether they are of national or international importance or known only to a handful of people, names connect places to their local communities and often reflect our heritage and culture.
New Zealand and each Australian state and territory — including our Antarctic areas of interest — have a place name registrar, naming board or committee for approving or registering names. However it is the "Committee for Geographical Names of Australasia" ("CGNA") that coordinates place-naming activities across Australia and New Zealand.

ICSM's role is to provide leadership, coordination and standards for surveying, mapping/charting and national framework datasets.
The Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM) was established by the Prime Minister, State Premiers, and the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory in 1988. Since that time the Australian Capital Territory and New Zealand have joined ICSM. The Australian Defence forces are also represented on ICSM.
Membership is comprised of senior representatives of surveying and mapping agencies.
Prior to 1988 a similar body, the "National Mapping Council" ("NMC"), had coordinated cooperative Commonwealth, State and Northern Territory mapping programs since 1945. Although the NMC had been an effective forum, the changing operational environment of the late 1980s led to the cessation of the NMC and the formation of ICSM to cover both surveying and mapping issues, as they related to Government activities, to ensure continued cooperation in these activities on a national basis.

Die neunorwegische Sprache "Landsmål" (= "Landessprache") wurde 1850 von dem norwegischen Sprachforscher Aasen, Ivar (1813-1896) geschaffen. Er bezog sich dabei auf bäuerliche Dialekte.
Bis heute herrscht in Norwegen jedoch das dänisch beeinflusste "Riksmål" (= "Reichssprache"), seit 1929 "Bokmål" (= "Buchsprache") genannt vor.
Im Jahr 1929 wurde "Landsmål" in "Nynorsk" (= "Neunorwegisch") umbenannt.

Neon, Ne - chemisches Element (W2)
Die Bezeichnung dieses chemischen Elements bezieht sich auf griech. "to neon" = "das Neue". Vermutlich beruht die Namensgebung darauf, dass das 1898 von Ramsay und Travers entdeckte "Neon" nach der Entdeckung von Argon und Helium von Ramsey vorausgesagt wurden und dann eben als "neues" Edelgas entdeckt wurde. Der Name soll von dem 13-jährigen Sohn Ramsey's ursprünglich als "Novum" vorgeschlagen worden sein. Um jedoch das Suffix "-on" in allen Edelgasen fortzuführen ("Argon", "Krypton", "Xenon", "Radon"), nannte Ramsey es "Neon". (Das "Helium" tanz allerdings aus der Reihe.)
Das Symbol dieses chemischen Elements bezieht sich auf die Anfangsbuchstaben des Elementnamens.

Ramsay liked the suggestion but, wanting to maintain the chemical family's suffix "-on", called it "neon" (from the Greek "neos" = "new", "young").

Der "Kammerjäger" war ursprünglich ein "richtiger" Jäger im persönlichen Dienst eines Fürsten, so daß er auch Zutritt zu den adligen Räumen hatte. Vermutlich wurde er zunächst ironisierend zum Jäger von Ungeziefer in Kammern, also allgemein in bewohnten Räumen, umfirmiert. Die Verbindung kann man sich durchaus bildlich vorstellen. Immerhin waren in früheren Zeiten Perücken beliebte Aufenthaltsorte für Ungeziefer, so daß sich der "richtige" "Kammerjäger" auch innerhalb des Hauses nützlich machen konnte.

Das Bild dieser Redensart kommt vom heute in Deutschland verbotenen Vogelfang mit Leimruten. Das sind kleine, dünne, mit Leim bestrichene Stäbchen, die nur lose mit dem einen Ende in eine Stange gesteckt werden und herabfallen, sobald sich ein Vogel draufsetzt. Beim Herunterfallen der Leimrute flattert der Vogel und bleibt mit den Flügeln am Leim kleben.
Wenn wir heute sagen, "dass wir jemandem auf den Leim gegangen sind", dann meinen wir, dass wir uns von jemandem haben betrügen lassen bzw. haben übervorteilen lassen.
Wenn jemand "nicht auf den Leim geht", dann lässt er sich nicht täuschen. Wenn "das ein Leim ist", dann meinen wir eine betrügerische Verlockung.

Die "London Underground Tube map" in ihrer heutigen Form wurde 1933 von Henry C. Beck, einem Angestellten von "London Transport" vorgeschlagen und entwickelt. Sein U-Bahnplan ähnelte einm Elektrischen Schaltplan.
Bis dahin bildeten die U-Bahnpläne den geographischen Verlauf der Strecken nach. Beck reduzierte die Darstellung auf waagrechte, senkrechte und im 45 Grad Winkel diagonale Linien.
Damit übertrug er die von George Dow seit 1908 praktizierte Darstellung, einer einzelnen Verbindung als gerade Strecke, auf den kompletten U-Bahnverbund.
Diese Darstellung hat allerdings auch Nachteile. Der U-Bahnplan läßt keine Rückschlüsse mehr auf die tatsächlichen Entfernungen zu. So findet man bei wikipedia ein Beispiel bei dem der Ortsunerfahrene 5 Stationen mit Umsteigen fährt um ein 100 Meter entferntes Ziel zu erreichen. Es gibt sogar ein Beispiel in dem der Plan die reale Orientierung (nach Himmelsrichtungen) genau falsch herum darstellt.

Frank Pick was Chief Executive of London Transport between 1913 and 1938. He had a great interest in visual arts and commissioned both the "London Underground font" and the famous "London Underground logo".
... the font is still in wide use by designers and the London Underground logo is almost a symbol of London itself.
Pick asked the calligrapher, Edward Johnston, to design the font in 1915. In 1916 after collaboration with Eric Gill (he of "Gill Sans font" fame), the "Johnston Sans Serif font" was produced. A few minor modifications later and we have the "Johnston Underground Font" which is still used on all London Underground maps, stations, posters and materials today. The New Johnston Underground font can be downloaded, too.

Henry C. Beck (1903–1974), known as Harry Beck, was a graphic designer, best known for creating the present London Underground Tube map in 1933.

Die Bezeichnung dieses chemischen Elements bezieht sich auf griech. "to neon" = "das Neue" und "didymos" = "Zwilling". Im Jahr 1842 hatte Carl Gustav Mosander ein Element "Didymium" genannt, nach "griech. "didymos" = "Zwillinge", weil es dem Element "Lanthanum" sehr ähnlich war und mit ihm zusammen entdeckt wurde.
Im Jahr 1885 führte der Österreicher Auer von Welsbach die Aufteilung von "Didymium" durch und nannte die beiden Stoffe "Neodymoxid" = ""neuer Zwilling" und "Praseodymoxid" = "grüner Zwilling" durch. Die erste Reindarstellung gelang allerdings erst 40 Jahre später.

Über den "Einbandgestalter":
Udo Lindenberg, 1946 in Gronau/Westfalen geboren, Musiker, Schauspieler und Maler. Er startete seine Karriere in den 1970igern erst als Jazzmusiker. Mit seiner Schallpatte "Alles klar auf der Andrea Doria" hatte er 1973 einen ersten Erfolg zu verzeichnen. Er gründete seine Band, das "Panikorchester" und startete seine Karriere als Deutschlands berühmtester Rocker. 1975 schrieb er sein erstes Buch "Albert Alptraum bis Wotan Wahnwitz", 1980 übernimmt er in "Panische Zeiten" seine erste Filmrolle. Mit dem Titel "Sonderzug nach Pamkow" erregte er 1983 nicht nur musikalische sondern auch politische Aufmerksamkeit. Seine Karriere erreicht 2004 seinen Höhepunkt als er sein 30-jähriges Bühnenjubiläum mit der Tournee "Aufmarsch der Giganten" feiert. Lindenberg wurde 1989 das Bundesverdienstkreuz verliehen. 2006 bekam er die EinsLive Krone für sein Lebenswerk.

Improbability is still a strong bias to overcome. Much that is happening today would have been dismissed as unbelievably bad science fiction only 15 years ago. The US with secret prisons torturing Muslims? Street sweepers in India with their own cell phones? Obesity a contagious disease? A trusted encyclopedia written by anyone? Yeah, right, give me a break.
Believing in the improbable is quickly becoming a survival skill.
Note: 15 years ago some of these predictions were far more outrageous than today, and some are more outrageous today than back then. We made short lists of ideas and emailed them to provoke each other. This is the aggregate of several rounds. I don't think we are especially better at it than others; anyone can play the game.

"Elektromagnetische Felder" ("EMF") ist die Bezeichnung für den untersten Frequenzbereich des elektromagnetischen Spektrums (0 Hz bis 300 GHz).
EMF kommen überall in unserer Umwelt vor – aus natürlicher und immer häufiger auch aus künstlicher Quelle – gewollt bei der Übertragung von Funksignalen oder als Nebenprodukt bei der Stromversorgung von elektrischen Geräten. Deswegen wird oft auch von Elektrosmog gesprochen.
