THEE and THOU
The pronoun of the second person in English grammar used to break down like this:In the Middle Ages, people began to use plural forms in all cases, at first as a sign of respect to superiors, then as a courtesy to equals. By the 1600s, the singular forms had come to represent familiarity and lack of status, and fell from use except in the case of a few dialects, notably in the industrial north of England. People in Lancashire north of the Rossendale Forest and Yorkshire used to be well known for their use of the singular second person pronouns "tha" (nom.) and "thee" (acc.). For religious reasons, the Quakers also retained the familiar forms, though generally in such a way that thee was used in all cases, along with the third person of the verb ("thee has" where grammar would dictate "thou hast"), and they brought it to America, where it was current in entire neighborhoods of Philadelphia till the 1890s and in some farms in the hinterland for perhaps another generation after that.

The Old English rune poem is contained in a manuscript called Cotton MS. Otho B 10 which was destroyed in 1731. Hence, it is known by copies only. This Futhorc contains 29 named runes, and rune Dagaz (called "daeg") is after rune Othala (called "eþel"). A facsimile of this poem in Hickes' Thesaurus is available in Maureen Halsall's book.
Cotton MS Domitian A 9 describes a Futhorc of 33 runes, upon which two different scribes, and a 16th century "corrector," have left traces. It is obvious that one of the two scribes inverted the rune Dagaz (here called "deg") and the rune Mannaz (here called "mann") Both scribes wrongly attribute the name "eþel" to rune Ehwaz, but both give its correct sound value of "e." One scribe assigns the correct sound value of "oe" to the rune Eþel (the English equivalent to Germanic rune Oþala), but doesn’t give it a name.
Finally both put the rune Eþel after the rune Dæg (which is the name of the English equivalent to Germanic rune Dagaz). It is impossible to determine whether or not Eþel should in principle follow or preceed Dæg. Both cases are met, since many other Futhorcs put them in a different order.
Another Futhorc is found in Cotton MS Galba A2, actually known as a facsimile of Hickes' edition. In this Futhorc, the name of rune Peorþ is badly transcripted. Rune Eþel is given with a variant form, which is the one proposed also in Cotton MS Domitian A 9, and it confirms the hypothesis that the "pro" over the Eþel rune in Cotton MS Domitian A9 is indeed indicating that two alternate forms of Eþel are possible. Rune Eþel now follows rune Daeg.
The Old English rune poem is dated of the 10th or 11th century, but scholars agree that the original must have been written one or two centuries earlier. The manuscript has been destroyed and the only trace we have of it is Hickes' Thesaurus facsimile, which looks like a facsimile, but Derolez is doubtful. Hickes might well have introduced something into the original. It contains the drawing and the name of 32 runes, and a short poem related to the first twenty-nine of them.
The Norwegian rune poem is dated from the 12th or 13rd century, while the Icelandic one is dated from the 16th century.
The famous Abecedarium Nordmannicum is contained in a manuscript called MS. 878, found in St. Gall's library. The runes it contains are "obviously" mostly representative of the 16-rune Danish Viking Futhark. The accompanying text is in Old Low German (not in Anglo-Saxon). It is dated from the 9th century, and it is therefore the oldest of all the runic poems that we have.

Urheber war der Berliner Volksdichter Adolf Glasbrenner, der 1847 den Schwank "Ein Heiratsantrag in der Niederwallstraße" schrieb. Diese Redewendung geht auf ein Theaterstück des Berliner Schriftstellers Adolf Glaßbrenner (1810 bis 1876) zurück. Darin gibt es einen zerstreuten Briefträger, der sich ständig verspricht (d.h. beim Sprechen die Wörter durcheinander bringt). Einmal fällt ihm ein, dass der Zug mit der Post, die er austragen soll, schon vor drei Stunden angekommen ist, und er sagt: "Es ist allerhöchste Eisenbahn, die Zeit ist schon vor 3 Stunden angekommen!"

Glaßbrenner prägte die Redewendung "es ist (aller)höchste Eisenbahn" (siehe Wikiquote). Außerdem war er ein sehr scharfzüngiger Beobachter, beispielsweise schrieb er folgenden Spruch: "Um etwas zu gelten, müssen sich Nullen immer hübsch rechts halten."

35 Jahre Barcode in den Supermärkten
35 Jahre? Datiert der erste Einsatz einer "EAN" ("European Article Number") in Deutschland nicht auf 1977? Das ist richtig. Aber der Startschuss für Europa erfolgte, nachdem die Europäer vier Jahre lang die Entwicklung des weitgehend identischen "UPC" ("Universal Product Code") in den USA verfolgt hatten. Der Frühling 1973 sollte also für den Nutzungsbeginn von Barcodes in den Supermärkten im Gedächtnis vermerkt sein.
Die Handelsunternehmen wollten ihre immer kleiner gewordenen Margen dadurch aufbessern, dass Warenwirtschaftssysteme automatisiert und die Abwicklung am Verkaufsort optimiert wurden. So kam es zur Suche nach der bestmöglichen technischen Lösung in einem umfassenden Auswahlprozess, der von der Beratungsfirma McKinsey durchgeführt wurde. Ergebnis war die Gründung des "UPC Ad-hoc-Committee" ("UPCC") im Oktober 1970; die Spezifikationen wurden dann im April 1973 veröffentlicht. Alle im nachgeordneten "Symbol Technology Advisory Committee" ("STAC") versammelten Spezialisten aus Bereichen wie Scanner und Computer, Drucken und Qualitätskontrolle, Filmmastering oder Symbolanordnung mussten ihre Entscheidung einstimmig fällen. Sie waren sich ihrer Verantwortung voll bewusst, als sie ihr Votum für den eindimensionalen binären Barcode gaben, der von IBM vorgeschlagen worden war.

In the Muslim world, one kind of terrorism, "assassination", has existed since shortly after the death of the prophet Muhammad. Of his early successors, three were killed with daggers. The very word "assassin" comes from a group founded by Hasan Ibn al-Sabbah, whose devotees, starting in the eleventh century, spread terror throughout the Muslim world until they were virtually exterminated two centuries later. They killed rival Sunni Muslims, probably in large numbers. Perhaps one-third of all Muslim caliphs have been killed.

Anruf statt Parkschein: Handyparken in deutschen Städten kommt
Berlin (dpa) - Handyparken bedeutet nicht, das Handy zu parken. Ein Anruf mit dem Mobiltelefon soll Autofahrern vielmehr den Gang zum Parkscheinautomaten ersparen. In 22 deutschen Städten können die Parkgebühren schon mit Hilfe des Telefons bezahlt werden, darunter in Berlin, Hamburg und Köln, aber auch in kleineren Städten wie Neustadt an der Weinstraße in Rheinland-Pfalz. Ob sich die neue Technik durchsetzt, muss sich erst noch zeigen. Die Anbieter hoffen auf steigende Nachfrage, heißt es beim "Bundesverband für Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien" ("BITKOM"). Laut ADAC erfreut sich das neue Geschäftsfeld wachsender Beliebtheit. Auch wenn andere Experten vermuten, dass schon bald das Navigationsgerät die Sache mit den Parkgebühren regelt.
