Die "Durand Line" wurde 1893 von "Sir Henry Mortimer Durand" festgelegt. Sie trennte British India von Afghanistan. Nach dem Ende der Kolonialzeit wurde daraus 1.640 Meilen lange Grenze zwischen Pakistan und Afghanistan.

Gandhara ist eine historische Landschaft in Vorderindien, im Nordwesten des alten Indien, heute Nordpakistan und Ostafghanistan. Es wurde gebildet nachdem das Reich Alexanders des Großen auseinanderfiel. Der Sanskrit-Name "Gandhara" bedeutete "parfümiert" = engl. "perfumed". ) but was actually the furthest outpost of Greek culture in Asia. Heute ist "Kandahar" der Name einer Stadt im Süden Afghanistans.

Today UNDP in Afghanistan is supporting the Government and people of Afghanistan as they strive to create an effective and participatory system of governance, to reduce poverty, and to recover from decades of conflict. Working closely with other UN agencies within the framework of the UN Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA), UNDP provides flexible and quick responses to immediate needs and supports Afghanistan's longer-term development programmes.
The bulk of international assistance since the Bonn Agreement has supported the return of refugees and other humanitarian interventions. Now is the time to focus on sustainable reintegration of returnees and former. combatants and the rebuilding of durable livelihoods for all Afghans. As the United Nations' global development network, this is where UNDP will make its greatest contribution to the future of Afghanistan.
