Geographical (Nomenclature) Naming in Tasmania
Nomenclature refers to systems of naming. In Tasmania, geographical place names are primarily the responsibility of the Nomenclature Board. The Board approves questions of geographical nomenclature affecting Tasmania; undertakes research and investigation into the origin, priority and usage of geographical names; and adopts rules of orthography and nomenclature.

The first settlement began in 1803 as a penal colony at Risdon Cove on the eastern shores of the Derwent River, amid British concerns over the presence of French explorers. In 1804 it was moved to a better location at the present site of Hobart at Sullivans Cove. The city, initially known as "Hobart Town" or "Hobarton", was named after "Lord Hobart", the Colonial Secretary.

Etymologie
Der Gattungsname "Tasmannia" verweist auf das Vorkommen in "Tasmanien", das wiederum nach dem holländischen Entdecker "Abel Tasman" (1603 –1659) benannt ist. Der Artname "lanceolata" bedeutet "lanzenförmig" und bezieht sich auf die Blattform. Das zugrundeliegende lateinische Substantiv ist "lancea" = dt. "Lanze".

The "University of Tasmania" ("UTAS") is an international university working out of Tasmania. The University was founded by an Act of the Tasmanian Parliament on 1 January 1890, and as the fourth oldest university in Australia we are an original 'sandstone' university.

On 1 January 1991, the Hobart-based University merged with its northern neighbour, the Tasmanian State Institute of Technology, to form a 'new' University of Tasmania. UTAS again extended its state-wide representation in 1995, opening the Cradle Coast Campus in Burnie.

Tassie Terms: A Glossary of Tasmanian Terms

Working at the Australian National Dictionary Centre, and using the proven methods of historical lexicography, Maureen Brooks and Joan Ritchie have compiled "Tassie terms", a companion volume to their Words from the West, which similarly records words used in, and perhaps peculiar to, agiven Australian regional community.

"Tassie Terms" contains some 645 dictionary entries of words with approximately 200 associated terms. Unlike Words from the West, this glossary does not rely exclusively on newspaper sources for its lexicon but draws on a variety of written material. Not all the words are exclusive to Tasmania but taken collectively the terms clearly reflect the identity and spirit of the Island State.
