Each year the Australian National Dictionary Centre (ANDC) selects a Word of the Year from a shortlist drawn up by our research and editorial staff. The words chosen for the shortlist are selected on the basis of their having come to some prominence in the Australian social and cultural landscape during the year. This year we invite members of the public to submit their suggestions for Word of the Year.
The Word of the Year does not have to be a word that was coined in this current year. Most new words often take some time to enter public consciousness. For example, the Centre’s Word of the Year for 2012 was green-on-blue: ‘an attack made on one’s own side by a force regarded as neutral’. Evidence for this term can be found before 2012 but the word gained prominence in the media during 2012 due to Australia’s ongoing military involvement in Afghanistan.
Our Word of the Year is chosen for its relevance and prominence in Australian culture and society but it does not have to be coined or used exclusively in Australia.
We welcome all suggestions. The word you suggest could be a new word, or a word that became so ubiquitous this year in the Australian media that it deserves consideration. Previous Words of the Year include podcast (2006), GFC (2008), and twitter (2009).
Please email us at andc@anu.edu.au with your suggestions. We look forward to receiving your contributions!
