Menschen, die sich kulturkritisch mit der vernetzten Welt auseinandersetzen, bezeichnen sich selbst gerne als "Kybernetiker". Sie verweisen dabei auf die Wurzeln des Wortbildungselementes "Cyber". Norbert Wiener gab der "Steuermannskunst", wie "kybernetike" aus dem Griechischen übersetzt heißt, 1948 den Namen "cybernetics" und beschrieb sie als eine Wissenschaft, die sich mit den Gesetzmäßigkeiten von Steuerungs- und Regelungsvorgängen in Natur und Technik auseinandersetzt.
Seitdem William Gibson in seinem Roman Neuromancer (1984) mit der Abkürzung "cyber" jedoch den Begriff "Cyberspace" bildete, um so die kollektive Welt von vernetzten Computern zu beschreiben, entstehen aus diesem Kontext heraus laufend neue Wortschöpfungen. Gibson selbst gilt als literarischer Begründer des so genannten "Cyberpunk". Den Vertretern dieses Genres gilt freie Information als oberste Maxime der globalen Vernetzung. Ihr zentrales Anliegen ist die symbiotische Beziehung von Mensch und Maschine.
Der "Cyberpunk" wurde zu einem einflussreichen Bestandteil der Popkultur, was nicht zuletzt an Filmen wie Blade Runner (1982) und The Matrix (1999) lag. Weitere häufig vorkommende Wortbildungen in diesem Kontext sind "Cybersex", ein Ausdruck, der sich auf das Thema Sex in einer virtuellen Umgebung bezieht, und der "Cyborg", eine Mischung aus Mensch und Maschine.

Das Wort "Cyberspace" geht auf den kanadischen Schriftsteller William Gibson zurück. Basierend auf der Beobachtung, dass Videospieler an den Raum glauben, den diese Spiele projizieren, nutzte er den Begriff des imaginären Raumes in den 80er Jahren für seine Science-Fiction-Literatur. Die eigentliche Revolution des Cyberspace ist jedoch nicht die künstliche Welt als solche, sondern die Möglichkeit, in diesen computererzeugten, fraktalen Raum als Teilnehmer einzutreten und die dort erzeugten Parallelwelten zu erforschen. Der Cyberspace ahmt dazu nicht nur gegebene Wirklichkeiten nach, sondern dieser erzeugt vor allem Wirklichkeiten, die es zuvor noch nicht gegeben hat.
