Die Arithmetik gehört zu den "sieben freien Künsten".
Die sieben freien Künste ("septem artes") sind die Künste, die "von freien Bürgern gepflegt wurden". Als Grundwissenschaften der Antike und des Mittelalters sind dies:
Arithmetik, Astronomie, Dialektik, Geometrie, Grammatik, Musik, Rhetorik.
Als "Neunte Kunst" kam dann die "Comic-Kunst" hinzu.
Aber: Welches ist die "achte Kunst"?
Im Mittelalter (seit dem 6.Jh.) waren die "Sieben freien Künste" noch einmal aufgeteilt in das "Trivium" bestehend aus "Grammatik", "Logik" und "Rhetorik" und das "Quadrivium" bestehend aus "Arithmetik", "Geometrie", "Musik" und "Astronomie".

Am 16.03.2004 wurde im Etymologie-Forum die Frage nach der Herkunft von "Arschgeige" gestellt.
Das Schimpfwort "Arschgeige" = "dummer Mensch" wird im Englischen mit "bastard" = "uneheliches Kind" oder "arsehole" im Französischen mit "conne" = "Blödmann" übersetzt. Eine Information, wie diese Wortbildung zustande kam konnte ich jedoch nicht finden.
Aber wenn ich schon dabei bin:
Der "Arsch" wird zurückgeführt bis auf ein idg. "*orso" = "Hinterteil" und wird in Zusammenhang gebracht mit dem idg. "*oros" = "Kuppe", "Anhöhe", das noch im griech. "óros" = "Anhöhe", "Berg" zu finden ist.
Die "Geige" könnte sich aus einem lautmalerischen "gig" entwickelt haben (wegen der schrillen Klänge), das noch in Begriffen wie "gickeln" oder "gieksen" = "kichern" zu finden ist. Das Verb "geigen" = "hin- und herbewegen" hat sich erst aus dem Substantiv abgeleitet.
Es gibt aber auch Hinweise, die besagen, dass "Geige" mit aisl. "geiga" und aengl. "gaegan" etwa mit der Bedeutung "abirren" oder "ausweichen" zusammenhängt.
Bleibt die Frage: "Was ist eigentlich die Arschkarte?"

Bambule, Krawall (W3)
Die "Bambule" ist ein afrikanischer Tanz, der zur frz. "bamboula" = "Trommel" (abgeleitet aus einer westafrikanischen Sprache).
Über die Gaunersprache kam der Begriff als "Krawall" in die deutsche Sprache. Dies geht wieder zurück auf die von Häftlingen praktizierte Form des Protestes, dem Trommeln mit allen möglichen Gegenständen innerhalb und ausserhalalb der Zellen.

In der Schule lernte ich die Tonleiter in der Form "BI-TO-GU-SU-LA-FE-NI-BI". Seither ist sie mir nicht mehr untergekommen . Heute kenne ich die Tonleiter nur noch in der Form "C-D-E-F-G-A-H-C".
Zumindest habe ich eine Quelle gefunden, in der der "Erfinder" meiner Schul-Tonleiter "Dr. Carl-Eitz" (1848 - 1924" genannt ist. Und bei Wikioedia findet man den Hinweis:
Beim Konsonanten l anfangend werden die fünf Vokale a, e, i, o und u so zugeordnet, dass beim Ganztonschritt zum nächsten Vokal geschritten wird, beim Halbtonschritt der Vokal gleich bleibt.
Damit ist also der Vokalanteil "-i -o -u -u -a -e -i -i" erklärt. Diese "Vorgehenseise soll das Lernen erleichtern. Aber warum er die Noten gerade "BI-TO-GU-SU-LA-FE-NI-BI" nannte ist damit noch nicht ausreichend erklärt.

Die "Bratsche" verdankt ihren Namen der Spielweise. Die Bezeichnung geht zurück auf ital. "viola da braccio", die sich zusammensetzt aus "viola" = altprovenzalisch für "Geige" und "braccio" (lat. "brachium") = "Arm". Somit ist die "Viola da braccio" bzw. die Kurzform "Bratsche" eine "Armgeige".
Entsprechend verdankt die "Gambe" ihren Namen der Spielweise, auf die Knie gestützt oder zwischen den Knien gehalten. Die Bezeichnung geht zurück auf ital. "viola da gamba", die sich zusammensetzt aus "viola" = altprovenzalisch für "Geige" und "gamba" = "Bein", "Knie". Somit ist die "Viola da gamba" bzw. die Kurzform "Gambe" eine "Kniegeige".
Auch ein besonderer Eröffnungszug beim Schachspiel, das "Gambit" geht auf über span. "gambito" auf ital. "gambetto" = "das Beinstellen", also auf "gamba" = "Bein" zurück.

Das das Leben und Sterben Jesu Christi dramatisch darstellende "Passionsspiel", neben dem Osterspiel der bedeutendste Typ des geistlichen Spiels, entstand im 13. Jh. und erlebte seine Blütezeit im 15. und 16. Jh.
Das früheste, in lateinischer Sprache abgefaßte Passionsspiel ("Kleines Benediktbeurer Passionsspiel") ist in der Sammelhandschrift "Carmina Burana" (lat. = "Lieder aus Beuren") (13. Jh.) aus dem Kloster Benediktbeuren überliefert.
Das "Weihnachtsspiel", ein Typus des mittelalterlichen geistlichen Spiels, entwickelte sich, ähnlich wie das nur wenig ältere "Osterspiel", aus der kirchlichen Liturgie. Ein die ganze Weihnachtsgeschichte umfassendes Weihnachtsspiel in lateinischer Sprache findet sich erstmals in der im Kloster Benediktbeuren gefundenen Handschrift "Carmina Burana" (lat. = "Lieder aus Beuren") des 13. Jh. Das erste volkssprachliche (deutsche) Weihnachtsspiel ist das "St. Gallener Spiel von der Kindheit Jesu"(Ende des 13. Jh.).
Chor (W3)
Der "Chor" kommt aus dem Griechischen ("choros" = "Tanz", "tanzende Schar" und auch "Tanzplatz"), gelangte als "chorus" auch ins Lateinische und ist dann bereits im Althochdeutschen "chor" als "gemeinsamer Gesang der Geistlichen" zu finden. Auch der Choral leitet sich hiervon ab.

Beethovens Werkchen "Für Elise" war eigentlich seinem Schwarm "Therese" gewidmet. Allerdings deutete man seine unleserliche Schrift bei der Drucklegung als "Elise".

Am 29.10.2007 fiel mir der "Laserplattenspieler" zum ersten Mal auf. Und da der Anbieter damit wirbt, dass es eine neue Errungenschaft ist, dürfte der Begriff noch nicht sehr alt sein. Allerdings dürfte er in Entwicklerkreisen schon seit einigen Jahrzehnten zumindest als Arbeitstitel benutzt worden sein.

Die Wiedergabe von Schallplatten ohne physischen Kontakt einer Abtastnadel zum Vinyl ist seit über 60 Jahren, eben seit Bestehen der Abnehmersysteme, ein Traum in der Welt von Audio und Musik:
Die Abtastung ohne die systembedingte, sofortige und immerwährende Beeinträchtigung der auf der Platte gespeicherten Musikinformation.
Es war ein Amerikaner, Robert E. Stoddard, der mit seiner theoretischen Grundlage die Verwirklichung dieses Traumes energisch vorantrieb. Er hatte schon während seiner Promotionszeit an der Universität von Michigan gegen die Argumente seines beratenden Professors und seiner Kollegen die theoretische Basis für den optischen Plattenspieler gelegt. Gleich nach Beendigung seines Studiums suchte und fand er Sponsoren und gründete 1983 die Finial Technology Inc. in Kalifornien. Hier startete er, seine als undurchführbar eingeschätzten Ideen in die Praxis umzusetzen.

Je "lauter" ein "Laut" ist umso besser kann man ihn hören. Und so ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass der "Laut" auf mhd. "lut" = "das mit dem Gehör Wahrnehmbare". Allmählich nahm es die Bedeutung "Inhalt eines ("laut" vorgelesenen) Schriftstücks" an (vgl. "Wortlaut" also eigentlich "Inhalt des gesprochenen Wortes", oder der Ausdruck "laut einer Pressemeldung ...").

Melodie, Modul, Model, modular, Modularität (W3)

Vielleicht war am Anfang ja nicht das Wort, sondern die Melodie? - Leider stimmt dies nicht so ganz. Am Anfang war das "Gemessene", das "Erfasste" = lat. "modus" = "das "Maß". Erst daraus entwickelte sich die "Melodie", sozusagen "die Musik bzw. Geräusch nach Maß". Und eine kleine "Melodie", bzw. - genauer - ein kleines Maß - ist das lat. "modulus". Und dieses ging dann als "Modul" in viele verschiedene Sprachen ein.
Heute trifft man "Modul" und "Model" in vielen Variationen, d.h. zur Bezeichnung vieler verschiedener "Modelle" an. Mir gefällt davon immer noch dam besten das weibliche "Model", das "Fotomodell". Aber bei allen Modell-Varianten steht der Begriff des richtigen Masses dahinter. (Das (Foto)modell diente wohl ursprünglich zum Massnehmen bei der Kleiderproduktion.) Eine "Modelleisenbahn" ist eine richtige Eisenbahn nur in einem kleineren "Massstab".
Wie das "Model" nun die Kurve zum "austauschbaren Teil eines Ganzen" dem "Modul" gekriegt hat, konnte ich nicht genau klären. Aber auch da ist die Idee des richtigen Masses noch zu erkennen. Ein "Modul" muss genau in einen grösseren Zusammenhang passen.
Und die Idee des Baukasten(prinzips) in dem jedes Teil seinen festgelegten Platz innerhalb eines Gesamtsystems hat (also auch sein vorgegebenes Mass hat) und dennoch oder gerade deshalb austauschbar ist, nennt man "Modularität".

ein "einzelner Ton" (lat./griech. "monotonia") ist nun mal sehr "monoton" = "eintönig".

Am 15.07.2004 erreichte mich folgende Anfrage:
... Beim Singen des Liedes "Es dunkelt schon in der Heide" stießen wir in den Strophen 3 und 4 auf Wörter, deren Bedeutung uns Heutigen nicht mehr geläufig ist. ...
Hier der Text-Auszug aus Strophe 3:
In meines Vaters Garten, / da stehn zwei Bäumelein;
Das eine trägt Muskaten, das andere Braunnägelein.
Und dann in Strophe 4:
Muskaten, die sind süße, / Braunnägelein, die sind schön.
Da es sich um Bäume handeln soll, kann ich mir schlecht vorstellen, dass mit Muskaten Muskatellertrauben gemeint sind. Andererseits sind doch Muskatnüsse nicht süß!? Und bei den Braunnägelein denkt man zuerst an eine Blume - aber ein Bäumelein??? Könnte evtl der Flieder gemeint sein, dessen Fruchtstände der Gewürznelke ähnlich sehen?

Leider ist es mir nicht gelungen, wirklich Erhellendes dazu zu finden. Da der "Muskatnussbaum" nicht in unseren Breitengraden wächst kann es sich eigentlich nicht um einen wirklichen "Muskatbaum" handeln. Allerdings bechreibt das Grimm'sche Wörterbuch eindeutig die exotische Pflanze. Auf jeden Fall dürfte es sich nicht um einen "Muskatweinstock" handeln. Vielleicht gab es ja die Bezeichnung "Muskat" auch für andere ähnlich riechende Kräuter (schliesslich ist ja von "Bäumlein" (und nicht von "Baum") die Rede).
Was die "Nägelein" angeht, so dürfte auf jeden Fall ein Zusammenhang zur "Nelke" bestehen. Ob es sich allerdings wirklich um eine botanische Nelkenpflanze handelt ist jedoch auch sehr fraglich.
Eine interessante Interpretation des Textes findet man unter "ahnensitte.net". Möglicherweise darf man den Liedtext also gar nicht wortwörtlich nehmen.
Im LEO-Forum wird das "Näglein" ausführlich diskutiert. Danach könnte es sich um "die Gartennelke oder eine nelkenartige Blüte" handeln.
Im Grimm'schen Wörterbuch, das auch online verfügbar ist, findet man den Hinweis:

Zu den "negelein" gibt der "Grimm" keine weiteren Auskünfte. Aber es gibt (oder gab) ein:
"NAGELKRAUT", n.: ein kraut zum blut stellen, herba sanguinaria, pilosella (DIEF. gl. 435b) MAALER 302a; auricula muris (STIELER 1032), weil es den "vernagelten" pferden gut ist. FRISCH 2, 6b; illecebrum, poterium sanguisorba, draba verna. NEMNICH 3, 405. HOLL wb. der pflanzennamen 261a.
Botanisch ist die Frucht nicht wie der gebräuchliche Name lautet, eine "Nuss", sondern eine einsamige "Beere". Sie trägt unter ihrem Fruchtfleisch einen steinigen Kern, der von einem zerschlissenen, karminroten Samenmantel, dem Arillus, umhüllt ist. Der Kern enthält in seinem Inneren den ölhaltigen Samen, die sogenannte "Muskatnuss". Der Samenmantel ist im Handel unter dem Namen "Muskatblüte" oder "Macis" bekannt.
"Muskat" von lat. "(nux) muscata", "muscatus" = "nach Moschus duftend", "muscus" = "Moschus".
Der Samen des Muskatnussbaumes wird als Gewürz verwendet.
Der Name "Moschus" bezeichnet einen Duftstoff, der seit der Antike aus dem im Himalaya heimischen "Moschustier", einem etwa hundegroßen Hirschverwandten, gewonnen wird. "Moschus" geht über lateinisch "muscus" auf griechisch "moschos" zurück, das aus dem persischen "moshk" (modernes Farsi "moshk") entlehnt wurde. Zugrunde liegt wahrscheinlich Sanskrit "mushka" = "Hoden", da nur die männlichen Moschustiere riechen und ihre Duftdrüsen oft mit "Hoden" verglichen und auch gleichgesetzt wurden.

"Macis" und verwandte Formen (englisch "mace", estnisch "maasis", spanisch "macia", hebräisch "mays") gehen zurück auf griechisch "makir", das ein Gewürz orientalischen Ursprunges bezeichnet; es wird in der Literatur als "Rinde" beschrieben und kann kaum "Muskatblüte" gewesen sein, da aus derselben Zeit keine Berichte über "Muskatnuß" vorliegen.
Für Grenadas Wirtschaft ist der Muskatnuss-Anbau von so zentraler Bedeutung, dass seine Nationalflagge sogar eine stilisierte Muskatnuss zeigt.
Der Name "Nelke" leitet sich von "Nagel" her, da die Knospen in der Form an Nägel erinnern. Analoge Namen kann man auch in anderen germanischen und germanisch beeinflußten Sprachen finden: Norwegisch "nellik", dänisch "nellike", isländisch "negull", schwedisch "neijlikor", holländisch "nagel", finnisch "neilikka", estnisch "nelgi" und Sranan "nagri".
Das Wort "Nagel" (althochdeutsch "nagal") hat Verwandte in praktisch allen indoeuropäischen Sprachen und bedeutet primär "Fingernagel", "Zehennagel"; die Bedeutung "(Metall-)Stift mit flachem Kopf" ist sekundär und auf germanische Sprachen beschränkt: altirisch "ingen", lateinisch "unguis" "Nagel", lettisch "nags" "Huf", griechisch "onyx" "Kralle", Sanskrit "anghri" "Fuß". Die zugrundeliegende indoeuropäische Wurzel läßt sich wegen des schwankenden Vokalismus nur ungefähr angeben: "ONGH-" bzw. "NOGH-" "Nagel", "Kralle".
Und der "Muskateller"-Wein ist möglicherweise wirklich sprachlich mit dem "Muskat" verwandt:
Der "Muskateller" ist eine der ältesten Rebsorten der Welt, die wahrscheinlich aus Vorderasien stammt, von den Phönikern und Griechen nach Europa gebracht und dann von den Römern in ihrem gesamten Herrschaftsgebiet verbreitet wurde. Der Name leitet sich wahrscheinlich vom lateinischen "musca" = "Fliege" ab, weil der intensive Duft Insekten anzieht.
Eine zweite Variante des Namens-Ursprunges sind die kleinen, dem Samen des "Muskat-Nussbaumes" ähnlichen Beeren. Schon die beiden Kaiser Karl der Große (742-814) und Friedrich I. Barbarossa (1122-1190) galten als große Verehrer des Muskateller-Weines. In Deutschland ist die Rebsorte seit dem 12. und in Österreich seit dem 14. Jahrhundert aus der Weinbaugemeinde Dürnstein im Weinbau-Gebiet Wachau urkundlich belegt.
Und wenn man den "Muskateller" nun noch in "Bocksbeutelflaschen" abfüllt (die ihre Bezeichnung bestimmten Körperteilen der männlichen Ziege verdanken), dann kommt doch wieder zusammen, was zusammengehört.
Und so hat eine einfache Frage zu einer grossen Rundreise geführt - sicherlich mit einigen interessanten Umwegen - aber die auslösende Frage dürfte statt einer Antwort eher weitere Fragen zur Folge haben.

Der Ursprung dürfte im griech. "aeidein" = "singen" zu suchen sein. Davon kommt das griech. "ode" = "Gesang", "Gedicht", wie auch dsas lat. "ode". Aus diesem wiederum entlehnten sich die Franzosen ihr "ode". Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts dürfte aus dem Französischen dieses Wort in unsere Sprache übernommen worden sein. Es bedeutet soviel wie "feierliches, erhabenes Gedicht". Interessant ist, daß das griech. "ode" auch noch in verschiedenen Zusammensetzungen erkennbar ist, wie z.B. "Komödie", "Tragödie", "Parodie" oder "Melodie".

A "portative organ" was a (somewhat) portable medieval instrument but, unlike the violin, an organ cannot play "portamento" (Italian, literally "carrying") (Anm.: "tragen des Tones"), which is a musical term for "gliding between notes". Another "carrying" word is "portfolio", from the Italian "porta fogli" which means "to carry leaves".

Strophe (W3)
Die "Strophe" ist eine griech. "Drehung", "Wendung". Der Chor vollführte eine "Wendung", um den Abschluss eines Liedteils anzuzeigen. Diese Bezeichnung übertrug sich auf die einzelnen Liedabschnitte, die "Strophen".
Die "Katastrophe" ist auch eine Wendung; allerdings "nach unten" (griech. "kata-" = "herab", "hinab"). An diesem Punkt wendete sich im Schauspiel die Handlung zur Tragödie.
