Anyway, the story for the word in its modern English use is that the two-piece bathing suit was introduced in 1946, and in search of a name for it, the designer chose Bikini, in reference to an (inhabited but evacuated) atoll in the Marshall Islands which had just been used for testing the atomic bomb. (The joke was, this bathing suit is as hot as a recently irradiated tropical island.)

Frustrated, I wondered if the transliteration is actually a p-initial word. That is, perhaps the place name actually begins with a non-velarized labial stop, which Marshallese spells [p]. Then I found a place name "Pikinni" ("pikinniy"), which evidently is composed of "pik" = "surface" and "ni" = "coconut". It's listed in the place-name section of Abo et al, but it's not clear there whether the word applies specifically to the Bikini atoll.

There have been rumours in the past concerning registration plates from the Bikini Islands, although to date, I haven't seen any proof. In the pre-nuclear period of this island, there were no cars or motorcycle in use on Bikini, and I doubt that anyone has returned to the island since nuclear testing was completed, short of US Air Force personnel, some Energy Commission people, and a few entrepeneurs.

Dabei ist das explosive Gemisch von wenig Stoff und viel nackter, weiblicher Haut schon seit der Antike bekannt. Vor 1600 Jahren trugen römische Animierdamen die enthüllende Wäsche und hüpften damit aufreizend vor den Augen ihrer Kunden herum. Die ehrbaren Bürgerinnen rümpften darüber die Nase. Gebadet wurde zwar nackt, aber streng nach Geschlechtern getrennt.

Happy Birthday: Der Bikini feiert 55.Geburtstag
Ab dem 6. Juli 1946 war für Frauen ein sonnengebräunter Bauch keine Wunschvorstellung mehr. Der Bikini eroberte die Modewelt.
Nur mit einem knappen Höschen und einem Büstenhalter im Zeitungsmuster-Look bekleidet lief das Model Micheline Bernardi am 6. Juli 1946 über den Pariser Laufsteg. Ein Staunen ging durch das Publikum. Soviel Haut hatte "Frau" bis dato noch nicht gezeigt.
Der "Bikini" spaltete die Gemüter: Frauenvereine und Kirchen gingen auf die Barrikaden und protestierten gegen "Sittenverfall" und die angebliche "Schamlosigkeit". Wogegen junge, moderne Frauen die neue Freizügigkeit begrüßten.
Louis Réard hatte den explosiven Charakter des "Süßen Nichts" vorhergesehen: Pate bei der Namensgebung waren die Atombombenversuche der USA auf dem "Bikini–Atoll" im pazifischen Ozean.
Die schrecklichen Konsequenzen der Atomversuche hatte der Bikini nicht. Im Gegenteil, die Frauen wurden immer selbstbewusster. Der sexy Zweiteiler eroberte bald die Schwimmbäder und Strände. Heute ist er nicht mehr wegzudenken. Schließlich ist "Bauch-frei" mega-in!

Vor 60 Jahren, am 5. Juli 1946, stellte der französische Modedesigner Louis Réard den ersten modernen Bikini vor.
Eigentlich sollte das knappe Kleidungsstück "Atom" heißen. Nach den Bombenabwürfen auf Hiroshima und Nagasaki war der Name aber tabu. Als dann am ersten Juli 1946 ein US-amerikanischer Bomber die erste Atombombe auf dem "Bikini-Atoll" zu Testzwecken abwarf, brachte das Reard auf die Idee: Er war sich sicher, dass sein freizügiges Kleidungsstück die gleiche moralische Entrüstung auslösen würde wie der Atombombentest auf dem "Bikini-Atoll". Und so benannte er den Zweiteiler "Bikini".

The genus "Bikinia" was erected in 1999 to accomodate a part of the species previously part of "Monopetalanthus", a genus that at that moment became a synoniem of "Aphanocalyx". "Bikinia" species are medium-sized to large trees of the rain forests of central Africa. Like many other Detarieae "Bikinia" trees have a root symbiosis with ectomycorrhiza, which might explain why they occur in gregarious stands, often mixed with other species of Detarieae.
Etymology:
"Bikinia" is named after the shape of the adaxial sepals. They are partly fused to the hypanthium, this part is usually triangular because most of the hypanthium is covered by the fused bracteoles. On top of the fused part one finds the free lobes of the adaxial petals which is often bi-lobed: hence together they form the two pieces of the famous two-pieced bathing suite: a triangle and a bi-lobed part.

Someone said, "There's always Tease Bikini Bar."
Whoever said this spoke of a bizarre establishment that was essentially a strip club without the "strip," where bikini-clad women pranced around and snatched dollar bills from hard-up software engineers.
Tara was joking. This was the joke: if San Jose can't even get strip clubs right, what can you expect in the way of art and music?
But when she said "Tease Bikini Bar," two of us simultaneously yelled, "Cheese Bikini Bar?" She quickly corrected the misunderstanding, but it was too late; we were horrified and amazed by this term "cheese bikini." Even the grizzled bartender seemed disturbed. The next day when we discussed the phrase at work, a few folks overheard and asked, "What the hell is cheesebikini?" But most of our officemates just shivered at the sound of "cheese bikini" as they hurried past.
"Cheesebikini." This particular combination of syllables had a compelling effect on everyone who heard it. Everyone seemed to have a slightly different idea of what that term might mean, and nobody ever forgot it.
So I registered the domain name.
And that's that.
