Inhalt: Hallo, was ist die wortwörtliche Bedeutung des Wortes "Biafra"? Aus welcher Sprache stammt das Wort "Baifra"? Wer hat "Biafra" als erster verwendet? Ist "Biafra" ein authentisches Afrikanisches Wort, oder stammt es von den Europäern? Auf den alten Landkarten aus dem 16. - 18.Jahrhundert steht das "Biafara" - ist dies etwas anderes als "Biafra"?

Leider habe ich auf diese Frage keine zufriedenstellende Antwort finden können. Aber hier wenigsten meine Fundstellen:
1966 waren in Nigeria schwere Stammeskämpfe ausgebrochen. In deren Folge erklärte Leutnant Odumegwu Ojukwu am 30.05.1967, die östliche Region zu einer souveränen und unabhängigen Republik namens "Biafra".
Das ging natürlich nicht lange gut. Nach erneuten Kämpfen und vielen 100.000 Toten wurde die Republik Biafra am 15.01.1970 wieder aufgelöst.
Vor 1967 gab es lediglich die "Bucht von Biafra". Dies war der östlich der Nigermündung gelegene Teil des Golfs von Guinea (heute "Bucht von Bonny").
Und so heisst es auch bei "Wikipedia":
- Den Landesnamen der neuen Republik leitete er von der Bucht von Biafra, einem Teil des Golfs von Guinea, ab.
- (Interessant: Als Nationalhymne wählte man merkwürdigerweise Jean Sibelius' "Finlandia" unter dem ebenso merkwürdigen Titel "The Land of the Rising Sun".
- Le nom "Biafra" vient de la baie situé au sud, sur la côte atlantique.
- The country was named after the Bight of Biafra, the bay of the Atlantic to its south.

Speakers of languages of the Chadic family live in an area south of the Sahara Desert extending from Nigeria and Niger in the west to central Chad Republic in the east. The most obvious evidence that these languages are related (that is, we can, in principle, trace them all back to a single language spoken thousands of years ago) is similarities in many items of vocabulary that cannot possibly be the result of chance resemblance or adopting words from each other or from some other language.
An example is the word for "crocodile". In the picture above you can see the word for crocodile in eleven ("egdemen", "hurumma", "jiran", "kada", "kadam", "kerma", "kijim", "kim", "kurum", "ngelem", "urmo") Chadic languages. These words all come from a single ancestral form "*kedem".

Der Name "Nigeria" entstand in Großbritannien, wo er um die Jahrhundertwende als Bezeichnung für die Besitzungen Großbritanniens im Westen Afrikas verwendet wurde.
