Every thing is different in New Orleans. This is the City of Lagniappe (something extra), romantic paddle boats, the French Quarter, muffelattas and Mardi Gras. Even the street names speak of New Orleans unusual character. Names like Tchoupitoulas, Melpomene, Chef Menteur, and Terpsichore. The dialects and colloquialisms spring from Creole, French, African, Irish and many other tongues too numerous to mention. Perhaps most noticeable of all is the common "Brooklynese" spoken by most New Orleanians as a result of Brooklyn middle school teachers being imported to New Orleans over a hundred years ago to help educate New Orleans children.

Die Einwanderer nannten "Ellis Island" die "Träneninsel", da sich hier nach einer 2 minütigen Befragung und einer medizinischen Untersuchung das weitere Schicksal entschied. Kranke, Analphabeten, politisch Radikale und Vorbestrafte durften nicht einreisen, wurden wieder zurückgeschickt oder auf einen anderen Kontinent verschifft, aber 98% der Einreisewilligen kamen ins Gelobte Land. Die größte Gruppe der Einwanderer stellten Italiener und Russen dar. So mussten die Einwanderer gleich zu Beginn eine steile Treppe zum Registrierraum empor steigen, bei der sie von Ärzten beobachtet wurden. Hatte jemand Probleme, so deutete dies auf ein Herzleiden hin und er wurde intensiver untersucht. Die Mediziner prüften auf Infektionskrankheiten, schauten sich Hände, Gesicht und Haare an und falls einer verdächtig war, bekam er ein Kreidezeichen auf die rechte Schulter gemalt (ein S stand für Senilität, ein Ct die Augenkrankheit Trachom und ein X für eine psychische Erkrankung). Die anderen gingen durch eine Tür mit der Aufschrift „Push to New York“ und waren aufgenommen. Die Männer und Frauen wurden in verschiedenen Schlafsälen untergebracht.

Gotham (W2)

New York wird umgs. auch "Gotham" genannt. Diese Bezeichnung ist eine altengl. Bezeichnung für "Ziegenplatz". Dies ist auch der Name eines Dorfes in Nottinghamshire, England.
Seit dem 15.Jh. wandelte sich die Bedeutung von "Gotham" zu "Ort der Verrückten".
Das äquivalent zum dt. "Schildbürger" ist "Wise man of Gotham".
Das ist also nicht gerade schmeichelhaft für die Einwohner von New York.

Die Kanadier haben dafür auch die Bezeichnung "House of Commons", das eigentlich die Bezeichnung für das "britische Unterhaus" ist.

kummelweck, weck, Beef on Weck (W3)

Nicht nur der "Kümmelweck" hat als "kummelweck" seinen Weg nach USA gefunden sondern auch der einfache "weck" = "Brötchen" ist dort heimisch geworden. Was im Saarland jedoch "Worscht un Weck" ist, gibt es in USA als "Beef on Weck".

Salty, seed-studded "kummelweck" rolls are a German vehicle for sliced beef.

German immigrants get credit for bringing the "kummelweck" to Buffalo (in German, "kummel" means "caraway seed" and "weck" means "roll"). It's the crunchy top of the weck that makes this sandwich of thinly sliced roast beef special. At Schwabl’s, where beef on weck has been on the menu since the restaurant opened in 1837, the sandwich is served with pan juices from the roast for dipping the roll's top half. Pumpernick ‘n Pastry, a local bakery that sells about 15 dozen rolls a day to Schwabl's, has a quick solution for out-of-towners who crave a "kummelweck":

Street fairs have came under criticism in the summer of 2005. A New York Post writer editorialized that the street fairs are all the same and that many should be eliminated. The debate was continued online on the Gotham Gazette. It’s long been known that the same vendors go to many of the street fairs, selling the same socks, sausages, and sunglasses.

"Sock and sausage" festival is a nickname for street fairs that is sometimes used.

Taxi (the word "taxicab" and the "yellow" color)
It has been said that Harry N. Allen coined the word "taxicab" in the fall of 1907, and that he also introduced the color "yellow" to his vehicles. I think that’s wrong on both counts.

Paris and then London both had "taxicabs" before they were introduced to New York in October 1907. The word "taxi" is short for "taximeter".

Harry Allen’s cabs were red. The W. C. P. Taxicab Company introduced the "yellow cab" in New York in the spring of 1909.

In some countries, taxicabs are commonly yellow. This practice apparently began in New York City, where taxi owner "Harry N. Allen" painted his taxis yellow after learning that yellow is the color most easily seen at a distance. See List of taxi cab colours.

He was the man who started the taxicab industry in New York City. He coined the name "taxicab" and copyrighted it.

The Bronx (W3)

Evidently, Jonas Bronck was Danish by ancestry. However, this seems to be less important than one might think. The Dutch of New Netherlands and New Amsterdam were quite receptive to just about anybody settling in their midst. Dutch was not the only language in New Amesterdam. English was widely used before Dutch surrendered their hegemony over the Hudson Valley and New Jersey.

Frisians in Early New York:
Tens of thousands of motorists enter Manhattan daily over the Third Avenue Bridge or leave it over the Wills Avenue Bridge. Very few of them are aware of the fact that they are crossing the site of the first European settlement north of the Harlem River. It is also the site of Jonas Bronck's farm, which he named Emmaus, after the village where, according to the Bible, the risen Christ first appeared to His disciples. The farm-house, east of the Third Avenue Bridge at the foot of Lincoln Avenue, bore the Bronck family motto, "Yield not to evil."

Jonas Bronck was a remarkable man. The son of a Danish Lutheran pastor, he was born in Copenhagen but spent most of his youth in the Faroe Islands, to which his father had been transferred. Later Jonas became influential in shipping circles in Holland, and was able to acquire ownership of a shipping vessel.

Tuxedo (W2)

"Tuxedo" dates from 1889 and is short for "Tuxedo coat", after a country club at Tuxedo Park, a village of southeast New York.
Definitions:
1. "A man's dress jacket", usually black with satin or grosgrain lapels, worn for formal or semiformal occasions. Also called "dinner jacket".
2. A complete outfit including this jacket, trousers usually with a silken stripe down the side, a bow tie, and often a cummerbund.
Note: In the U.S. if the invitation specifies "Black Tie" this would be the expected dress-code for gentlemen:
