Baccalaureate (W3)

Engl. "bacca lauri" = dt. "Beere des Lor", "Lorbeere", engl. "laurel berry" oder lat. "baculum" = dt.

"bachelor". Der engl. "bachelor's degree" entspricht dem niedrigsten akademischen Grad in englischsprachigen Ländern.

Magna Doodle (W3)

Der erste Teil dieser kreidelosen Schreibtafel dürfte auf die magnetischen Eigenschaften dieser Erfindung anspielen ("liquid suspension or dispersion medium filled with tiny magnetic particles"). Vielleicht soll auch noch lat. "magna", "magnus" = "groß" mitklingen. Und das engl. "doodle" bedeutet u.a. "Gekritzel". Also "Schreiben mit Hilfe einer magnetischen Tafel".

Ein "sophomore" ist ein Highschool-Schüler bzw. Student im zweiten Studienjahr.
(griech. "sophós" = "geschickt", "klug" und lat "morus" = "albern", närrisch".)

...
The word "sophomore" literally means "wise fool" (many thanks to my high school etymology teacher).
It means simply that you think that you know more than you actually do. It's a frame of mind and it's a dangerous one but it can be actively dealt with if you are cognizant of its existence. Unfortunately, it plagues many young players as they embark upon their second go-around in The Show - the attitude that 'I did it once and it really wasn't that hard.
