amiright - Band-Names - Missheared Lyrics

(E1)(L1) http://www.amiright.com/
(E?)(L?) http://www.amiright.com/names/bandnameorigins.shtml
Aber es bedeutet wohl "Am I Right".

Der Betreiber sagt dazu: I can't verify all of these stories, so do take them with a grain of salt. I try and delete the ones that I know to be bogus, but I don't know the origins of every band name (and some bands intentionally tell different stories about picking their band name).

Checking it out, Cahn and Chaplin learned that the lyrics had been written by one Jacob Jacobs, who, with his music-writing partner Sholom Secunda, had composed "Bei Mir Bist du Schon" for a Yiddish production called "I Would If I Could." They'd already tried to sell it to Eddie Cantor, with no luck. When Cahn offered $30, they were happy to accept. This was nothing unusual for them. They'd sold hundreds of songs for $30 apiece.

The Holy Grail of Jazz & Joy", uraufgeführt beim Steirischen Herbst 1985, heraus.

Boogaloo (W3)

"Boogaloo" — the synonym of choice among the cognoscenti for "rhythm and blues" — is a stylish and profound meditation on the art, influence, and commerce of black American popular music. At once deeply knowing and keenly observant, Arthur Kempton reveals the tensions between the sacred and the profane at the heart of "soul music", and the complex centrality of "Aframericans" in the evolution of our mass musical culture. What that culture is all about, who owns it, and who gets paid—these are issues of moment in his epic narrative.

(E?)(L?) http://www.nybooks.com/articles/16478
(E?)(L?) http://www.pbs.org/search/search_results.html?q=boogaloo

The "boogaloo" is, or was, one of the thousand dances the land was full of in the 1960s, enumerated in inventory songs such as James Brown's "There Was a Time" and the Isley Brothers' "Nobody But Me": the skate, the swim, the pony, the monkey, the camelwalk, the shing-a-ling. Arthur Kempton notes that it made its debut as the title of a million-selling but faintly remembered 1965 release by the Chicago duo Tom and Jerrio, a song that launched two major catch phrases of the era, "sock it to me" and "let it all hang out." The "boogaloo" outlasted many of its competitor dances, or at least its name did, even making the transition into Spanglish as "bugalú".

Cuckoo Egg, Kuckucksei (W3)

(E?)(L?) http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/C/Cuckoo_Egg.html

Music Dictionary Online is part of our award-winning Music Theory and History resource.

Music Dictionary Online's primary purpose is, in the case of non-English words and phrases, to offer translations and, more generally, and where appropriate, to offer explanations and comments about general (non-musical) and specialist (i.e. musical, etc.) terms that might be found in musical scores, books on music, web sites, CD notes, concert programmes, etc.

The selection of general words and phrases is such as might be found in any good pocket dictionary. Our selection of specialist terms include words and phrases taken from a large number of related fields including classical and modern dance, art, poetry, drama, cultural philosophy (including aesthetics), education (particularly as it applies to music), music history, physics, the physiology and psychology of sound and music, music technology, musical instrument manufacture, some notable works and important non-composer figures in music.

We have also added many terms associated with world music traditions, jazz, rock, pop and related musical genres.

Information about composers will be found in our 'in-progress' Composers Online.

The entries are usually concise and, where available, we provide links to supplementary material from Music Theory Online, Musical e-Monographs or external websites. Where, over time, words have changed their meanings or usage, we have tried to reflect this.

Basically, it's the kind of music that grows from the subculture of science fiction and fantasy fans. Here are some, maybe, more formal definitions, along with information about filk music and lists of filk pages.

Es gibt zwar einige Definitionen, aber was heißt "filk" und wo kommt es her? - Ich finde es nicht im Wörterbuch. - Selbst der Merriam Webster antwortet: "The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary."

The official birthday of Hip Hop is November 12th, 1974.
...
A Little Background Information: In the early years of the culture, the movement went untitled until Afrika Bambaataa, started calling it "Hip Hop", a term originated by Lovebug Starski. In the 70's, ten years prior to it's gaining global recognition, "Hip Hop" was a celebration of life gradually developing each of it's elements to form a cultural movement. Due to it's energy, dynamics, and momentum, "Hip Hop" culture has become, ultimately, a key to upliftment and reformation, as well as a billion-dollar industry.

WHERE DID THE NAME HIP HOP COME FROM? - BY DYNAMITE J

Where did the name "Hip Hop" come from, and who is responsible for saying. The name "Hip Hop" came from Afrika Bambaata? When Bam throws a party, he feels like a theme name for his party would be better and more exciting. If you were given two flyers and one said "Party" at 123 four st., or Flava Jam 2002 at 123 four St. One of the names for his early parties was "THE HIP HOP BEENY BOP". Some could equate this as a teen Jam because of the phrase Beeny Bop. "Bop" is also short for "Boppers".
So when Bambaata had his parties, and Starski would Mc the jam, He would say thing s like WELCOME TO THE HIP HOP BEENY BOP! THAT'S RIGHT YA'LL, HIP HOP TILL YOU DON'T STOP. So true respect is giving to Mc Starski with being credited for popularizing the Phrase "Hip Hop", but it's also respect and credit due to Afrika Bambatta for starting the word HIP HOP.

...
MS - How did the name Hip Hop originate? And how did your career as a DJ first begin?
AB - The phrase "Hip Hip" came from Love Bug Starski, who used to use it in their rhymes. Back then the music had no name, maybe "Boi-oi-oing", or "Be Bop". Pulling it together as a culture, the name "hip hop" started with myself and the Universal Zulu Nation. Back then we were doing our Disco thing - Love Bug, myself, Kool DJ D, DJ Hollywood, and others, back when there was no "Hip Hop". Then Kool Herc came playing all those break beats, and I already had those types of records, so I started playing all that same stuff after him, and we sat down and started compiling the music and that became what developed into the culture of "Hip Hop".

"Hipster" - One who possesses tastes, social attitudes, and opinions deemed cool by the cool. (Note: it is no longer recommended that one use the term "cool"; a "Hipster" would instead say "deck".) The "Hipster" walks among the masses in daily life but is not a part of them and shuns or reduces to kitsch anything held dear by the mainstream. A "Hipster" ideally possesses no more than 2% body fat.

In [Maurine Dallas] Watkins's play [sc. "Chicago", written 1926] Annan [a real-life murderess]is renamed Roxie Hart. She lives in Chicago, where she lies in the hotbed of booze, men, and hotcha. Jazz is her downfall. This music, born out of minstrelsy and the blues in the Storyville section of New Orleans, was first called "Jass" music, in homage to the jasmine perfume that prostitutes wore in the red-light district. Like so much black underground culture, it became a fashion among whites when it moved up north to cities like Chicago. [etc. etc.]

Leila, Layla (W3)

(E2)(L?) http://www.clapton.de/news/2003.htm

Once "Background Music," now "Audio Architecture," Muzak creates experiences with music.
When Gen. George Squier patented the transmission of background music in the 1920s, that is music from phonograph records delivered over electrical lines, he soon found out that it not only soothed the minds of his workers, it enhanced their production. What the general never knew is what his idea would become circa 1998: Muzak. All 2,000 employees, all 250,000 subscribers and all 80 million listeners worth.

...
He arrived at the name "Muzak" by combining the word "music" with the name of one of his favorite companies, "Kodak". Muzak gained its reputation as elevator music not long after elevators were installed in skyscrapers. Stores and building owners found that many people became nervous while being lifted in the air in a little box, and they played soothing music in the elevators to ease passengers' fears of falling to their deaths.
...

Muzak thus joins that short list of lucky products whose brand name has replaced the common word for it - a trick also pulled off by Coke, Kleenex, Q-Tip, Cheez-Whiz, and Band-Aid, among others - at least in American English. The fact that Americans use brand names as everyday words speaks volumes about American culture somehow.
