This list gives English or other vernacular forms for the Latin names of printing towns as found in early printed books. There are also some references for early spellings of vernacular forms of names. This is a working document of the Cathedral Libraries Catalogue and is not intended to replace the lists in Orbis Latinus, Brunet, etc.
A brief list of reference sources can be consulted, together with links to some other relevant Web sites.

Der "Orbis latinus" soll, wie sein Verfasser im Vorwort zur ersten Auflage sagt, lediglich ein bequemes Handbuch zum Nachschlagen für den Leser lateinisch geschriebener historischer und geographischer Werke, für den Literarhistoriker und Bibliographen, fur den Archivar und Numismatiker sein. Er stellt aber außerdem nur eine Ergänzung zu den lateinischen Wörterbüchern dar, und deshalb sind als überflussig alle die Namen von vornherein ausgeschieden worden, die nur der antiken Literatur angehören, und deren Erklärungen in jedem lateinischen Lexikon zu finden sind, zumal die neueren Werke dieser Art hierin vollig genügen.
Dagegen hat eine große Anzahl von Namen Aufnahme finden müssen, die in der 1. Auflage fehlen; hierbei bin ich in erster Linie den Hinweisungen Oesterleys und den Indices Monumenta gefolgt und habe vor allem die deutsche Vergangenheit, in zweiter Linie die der Nachbarländer, besonders Frankreichs, Englands, Ungarns und Italiens berücksichtigt.
